Don’t leave your benefits to go unclaimed….

Last year the guardian reported that one in four elderly people struggled financially, estimating that the number of elderly people living below the poverty line had reach 1.9 million. Whilst these figures were reported, Age UK released figures to suggest that over £3.5billion worth of pensioner benefits remained unclaimed each year.

It is estimated that 0.5 million people over the age of 65 are unable to adequately heat their homes, 286,300 are unable to pay bills on time and 708,800 are unable to keep their homes free of damp. The figures were even more heart breaking when it came to boiler replacements and home repairs.

So, why is there such an issue if £3.5billion worth of benefits remain unclaimed? It is suggested that there is a serious lack of signposting and assistance for pensioners when trying to navigate their way through the pension system. Not only is difficult to work out which benefits a person is eligible for but the process of claiming them can be overwhelming. Pensioners have reported that the huge forms and assessments are too daunting and tiring to complete. Moreover, the struggle to find help or even the need to leave the house to visit the council to ascertain what help is available, is again a challenge they do not wish to face. Age UK has also reported that some pensioners do not like to ask for help and feel uncomfortable in claiming benefits.
